On the 24th May 16 leaders were invited to take part in a leadership conference/course where we were taught how to lead new sports some of which we had never heard of before like Goal Ball, deal with stress within a variety of situations and conquering fear and challenges when trying to reach a goal.
Across the day, we were spoken to by a bronze commonwealth games 2010 medallist for Badminton, Liz Cann. She talked about strategies useful to help overcome stress, anxiety and fear when aiming for something especially in sport. Persistence can change failure into great achievement! The overall theme was to continue to work to your full potential, even if it’s uncomfortable, until you get where you want to be.
Later in the day, alongside a range of other local secondary schools, we split up and focused on our chosen sport including Inclusive (mainly for those less able), Kwik Cricket, Tennis, Rugby, Archery and Netball. I chose All-inclusive sports workshop, which involved a variety of activities; Goal ball, curling and seated volleyball. We all agreed it was amazing and was completely different to what we would usually do. The weather was fab all day, so any outdoor activities were thoroughly enjoyed! Multiple coaches came in and helped with the other sports where they learnt the rules and how to umpire/referee through playing and practice.
Overall, we learnt so much we can utilise in the future and definitely enjoyed it. I would recommend Leadership Development to all Sponne Students! Set your goals high and don't stop until you get there!
