English as Additional Language (EAL) How to support secondary students

This training is facilitated by Speak-up School for English

This half day course will provide tips and practical steps for secondary phase teachers on how to support students with English as an additional Language. The training will focus on;

  1. EAL Awareness- a short lesson in a language unknown to participants followed by a group discussion to demonstrate how new EAL arrivals may feel in the classroom. Looking at strategies to increase students’ chances of accessing lessons.
  1. EAL Toolkit. How to get it right?- what EAL teaching is about- stats, barriers, elements of differentiation, examples of EAL-friendly resources and teaching strategies, EAL assessment, practical task (teachers to make a sample unit of work EAL-friendly). 

The workshop will cover EAL students of all nationalities.

It is a 1/2 day training, with the option to attend either AM or PM. (Subject to availability)

No more than 25 participants to enable all, to actively engage with the practical tasks.
