Maths Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) Course

Are you interested in re-training to teach Maths?

This programme is a blended approach involving 1 face to face session and 8 virtual sessions and optional one to one tutorials, as well as work between sessions to consolidate subject knowledge. It is suitable for any teachers wishing to retrain to deliver Maths sessions within their setting.

The virtual sessions are 8 afternoon sessions and focus on the pedagogy of maths, as well as subject knowledge.  You will discuss misconceptions, common areas of weakness and ideas of how best to approach a subject.  Post session materials will be based on the topics covered during the sessions and will build in difficulty to accommodate different levels of prior knowledge. Additional work between sessions will aim to reinforce and assess the impact of sessions. Support will be available via email between sessions and there is the option of one-to-one tutorials at the end of the course.

In order to complete the course and gain certification delegates will be expected to:

  • Complete a pre-course and post-course subject knowledge audit
  • Complete all Post session materials
  • Complete a reflective journal after each session to reflect on personal subject knowledge, what you have gained from each session and any areas for further improvement.
  • Attend all sessions.

If participants are currently teaching in a school they should talk to the mathematics department to find a school-based mentor to support them throughout the course. If participants are not currently teaching in a school they should make the teaching school aware of this so we can put provision in place.
