Understanding and Supporting Students with ASD

This training is suitable for Secondary School based Class Teachers, Teaching Assistants & SENDCos.  The training session explores the nature of autism as a spectrum condition, detailing the core diagnostic features and additional differences like sensory sensitivities and anxiety. It includes interactive activities to foster empathy and understanding of autism through "unpacking the triad" and experiential exercises. Practical strategies are outlined for supporting autistic students, covering structured classroom environments, communication adaptations and social interaction facilitation. The training also examines gender differences in diagnosis and presentation, focusing on underdiagnosed groups like girls.

Key Objectives:

  1. Increase understanding of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), including the triad of differences in social interaction, communication and flexibility of thinking.
  2. Equip participants with practical strategies for supporting students with autism in mainstream education settings.
  3. Raise awareness of common challenges faced by students with autism, including sensory differences, anxiety and rigid thinking patterns.
  4. Highlight the strengths and unique perspectives of autistic individuals, promoting a strengths-based approach.
