Leadership

Consolidating Classroom Practice (CCP) provides teachers with in-depth coaching tailored to a self-assessment of their teaching. It provides opportunities to deepen their understanding of high quality classroom practice and teaching and learning. Participants improve their teaching through facilitated practice and the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues.

The programme supports a wider range of teaching activities, including: planning lessons, starter activities, and plenary sessions, questioning techniques, engaging in learning, challenging learning, assessment and adaptive teaching strategies.

The CCP builds confidence of staff to become used to class observations and adopt a positive “can do” attitude.

Mary Myatt is an education adviser, writer and speaker. She has written extensively about leadership, school improvement and the curriculum. Her most recent book is Alternative Provision Huh part of the Huh series of books. Mary’s most recent work is the development of The Teachers’ Collection underpinned from the ‘Faster read” research from the University of Sussex.

Key Objectives:

  • To reframe KS3 as the intellectual powerhouse of the secondary school
  • To draw on research that shows that students are capable of achieving more
  • To consider literacy strategies to support all learners access the demands of the secondary curriculum
  • To consider the benefits of high-quality texts to support learning in all subjects
  • To take some lessons from primary in supporting learners develop reading
  • To draw on the research for oracy
  • To consider strategies to support students’ confidence in writing

Session Content:

  • Creating the conditions for ‘high challenge’ and ‘low threat’
  • What do students say about demanding work?
  • Drawing on the research about challenge, the importance of concepts and that our brains ‘privilege’ story
  • Sequencing and progression through the subjects
  • Strategies to support reading and writing and the pros and cons of including oracy
  • Principles of implementation of the curriculum
  • How the ‘automatic doors’ approach helps open the curriculum for all learners, including those with additional needs
  • Ways of checking the impact of teaching on pupils’ learning

Session Outcomes - Colleagues will leave with:

  • Ideas for making the curriculum accessible for all learners
  • Insights on making the best use of oracy in lessons

This course meets the statutory requirements of the two-year Refresher Training for Designated Safeguarding Leads in Northamptonshire schools.

As part of the Education Act 2002 and the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education, all schools must have a member of the leadership team as their Designated Safeguarding Lead. This person must take lead responsibility for dealing with child protection issues, referring concerns of significant harm, providing advice and guidance to support all staff to carry out their safeguarding duties, overseeing the school provision of early help and liaising with other agencies as required. This training must be updated every 2 years. This course is delivered by Lesley Pollard who is an experienced teacher, trainer and adviser. She currently works as an Independent Learning Adviser carrying out Safeguarding training and audits for a variety of providers as well as for individual schools.

 

Objectives:

  • To consider the implication of national and local changes with regard to Safeguarding and Child Protection in Northamptonshire schools;
  • To recap the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead in school;
  • To revisit the categories and possible indicators of the 4 categories of abuse, FGM, Forced Marriage, Grooming, CSE, So Called Honour-Based Violence, Radicalisation and Extremism, Gang Culture, County Lines, Child Criminal Exploitation;
  • To understand the impact of issues such as Child-On-Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Parental Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Homelessness, Appearing in Court and Mental Health problems on children/young people;
  • To consider the role of the Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Partnership and reiterate the importance of interagency working from early help to referral (including the Signs of Safety approach);
  • To consider the learning for schools from local and national Serious Case Reviews;
  • To understand the requirements relating to keeping, transferring and archiving Child Protection and Early Help records;
  • To consider how best to communicate with children and parents/carers regarding Child Protection issues.

  • How to seek early help and refer concerns (including the Signs of Safety approach);
  • How to keep, transfer and archive Child Protection records.

The Olevi OTP PLUS training is carefully designed to further develop truly outstanding teachers: their classroom practice, their depth and understanding of coaching, and their ability to lead and grow the quality of their colleagues' practice.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the latest innovative pedagogy and develop the mind, skill and knowledge set to lead teams to create a significant impact. They will engage in the latest research to develop the moral and social capital of the organization.

This programme consists of six sessions focused on leading teaching and learning with a series of post session challenges, completed over a term. A key component of the OTP Plus is that participants will also be working with colleagues back in their school to utilize their professional learning from the programme to support the development of others.

Full attendance at this programme will enable you to develop and lead a learning focused team / organization; coach colleagues and teams to improve practice; model innovative practice across the school or trust; and engage in facilitating research driven CPD.

This training is facilitated by Lesley Pollard

As part of the Education Act 2002 and the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education, all schools must have a member of the leadership team as their Designated Safeguarding Lead. This person must take lead responsibility for dealing with child protection issues, referring concerns of significant harm, providing advice and guidance to support all staff to carry out their safeguarding duties, overseeing the school provision of early help and liaising with other agencies as required. This training must be updated every 2 years. This course is delivered by Lesley Pollard who is an experienced teacher, trainer and adviser. She currently works as an Independent Learning Adviser carrying out Safeguarding training and audits for a variety of providers as well as for individual schools.

Objectives

To ensure that the participant can identify:

  • What the safeguarding agenda actually means for Northamptonshire schools;
  • Current legislation which informs the role of the DSL;
  • The role and responsibilities of the DSL;
  • The importance of early help, signposting, interagency working and interventions to safeguard vulnerable children/young people;
  • The categories and possible indicators of the 4 categories of abuse, FGM, Forced Marriage, Grooming, CSE, So Called Honour-Based Violence, Radicalisation and Extremism, Gang Culture, County Lines, Child Criminal Exploitation;
  • The most vulnerable pupils including those with SEND, those with family members in prison and those subject to child-on-child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, appearing in Court, parental alcohol and drug abuse and mental health issues;
  • The role of the Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NSCP);
  • How to seek early help and refer concerns (including the Signs of Safety approach);
  • How to keep, transfer and archive Child Protection records.
