Alex Quigley - Why Learning Fails and Adaptive Teaching for Success

Audience: Secondary school teachers, middle leaders, curriculum, teaching, and learning leads.

Alex Quigley the Head of Content and Engagement for The Education Endowment Foundation will facilitate this training.

Alex is the author of multiple books for educators including “Why Learning Fails (And What To Do About It) and a regular contributor for the TES Magazine.

Overview: This session will help colleagues to understand the common challenges across key stages and subjects that see students struggle. It will establish a shared understanding of “adaptive teaching” and share a range of practical strategies to support pupils to succeed (including high need students).

Focus:

·       Session 1: Why does learning frequently fail?

Alex establishes common national issues for why students typically struggle and fail to access the curriculum, such as patchy prior knowledge and working memory limitations. The session helps define adaptive teaching in response to students’ variable learning and poses practical ways forward.

·       Session 2: Why do students commonly fail to learn independently?

Alex tackles the issues of poor planning, a lack of independence and low motivation. He explores positive solutions on how to adapt tasks and teaching strategies to increase independence and offer students’ approaches for revision, homework and more.
