On Friday 12th May Sponne took part in the English Schools Athletics Cup at a blustery Corby track. This competition is for Juniors (Yr 7 and 8 combined) and Inters (Yr 9 and 10 combined). Each competitor has to do a track and a field event and each performance receives a point score - all the scores for each individual team are added up to get an overall team score.
For the Inter girls the leading performers were Jasmin Bond in the 200m and Elin Roberts in the shot. Overall the team did really well and finished 3rd. The Inter boys achieved the same position with the throwing events being the most productive for Sponne athletes through Dillan Bishop, Kody Jonson and Bradley Cooper in the shot, javelin and discus respectively
Hopes were high for both Junior teams having won the sportshall indoor County athletics title in the winter and they did not disappoint. The boys event was extremely close throughout the day with Sponne, NSB and Campion swapping the lead during the competition. The result all hinged on the relay, ran in torrential rain, and the quartet of Liam Cowley, Nathan Ross, Nathan Trim and Lachlan Buchanan produced a fabulous performance to take overall victory by 2 single points. Individually Oliver Adams (100m and discus), jack Brydon (300m) and Alfie Harcombe (200m) stood out and produced outstanding performances but all boys contributed to the victory - the first time in Sponne's history.
The Junior girls also had individual high scorers in Katie Mannix (800m) and Lucy Underwood (shot) but the whole team performed above expectations and ended up resounding winners of the Championships - again the first time ever for Sponne !!
Northamptonshire is one of 8 Counties in the Midlands area. Once all the respective County competitions have taken place, the top eight point scoring schools are invited to the Midland A final with the next best teams going to a B final. We will have to wait to see the outcome but both Junior scores are extremely high and look likely to place them in the A final.
Well done to all those that took part.
