Main School Reception : 01327 350284

Many of our students have had the opportunity to make use of our new facility to improve their physical and mental well-being and although it is a considerable improvement on our previous fitness room, initial funding did not allow for an upgrade to some of the “tired“ equipment.

Consequently, last year, I applied to the Tesco Bags of Help Grant Scheme for funding support. I am delighted to let you know that our project along with the other two successful projects in our region has been selected to go forward a vote in Tesco stores where their customers will decide the outcome by voting for their favourite project each time they shop. Voting will take place from Wednesday 1st May 2019 to Sunday 30th June 2019 and we will be notified at the end of July 2019 confirming the amount of funding we will receive if successful.

The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive £4,000, the second placed project £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000. Obviously we want to be the first placed project, so when you are shopping in Tesco’s during May and June please put your disc in to the Sponne School Fitness Suite box.
Fingers crossed for a successful outcome.

Thank you for your continued support,

Justin Maybury

Following from a hugely successful District Championships, for the first time ever, Sponne qualified in each of the four categories for the County Sportshall Athletics Championships. These were held at Kettering Leisure Village with the 8 best schools in the County.

The standard was extremely high but Sponne students acquitted themselves well with many individual successes. For many of the Year 7’s this was their first experience of competitive athletics and the rich success that Sponne has enjoyed over the years looks set to continue.

The final results saw Sponne claim medals in all four categories. Both the Year 7 boys and Year 8 boys teams finished in bronze medal position. The Year 7 girls went one better and finished in silver medal position but the outstanding performance of the day went to the Year 8 girls team who were crowned County Champions !! Well done to all those that took part

Year 8 Girls Turn Heads at the County Cup

The Year 8 Netball Team is going from strength to strength at the minute and after a 1st place finish at the County Plate they were off to the County Cup. The girls were up against teams from Oundle, Winchester House, Wellingborough, Northampton High School and Moulton (the runners up from the Plate)

The girls started the day with a convincing win against Moulton 15-1 and then went on to beat Oundle 12-2. Next up was Wellingborough who we knew would give us a competitive game. After leading at half time we were out shone in the second half by a very strong 7 to finish 6-10 to Wellingborough. Northampton High School were our next opposition and again a strong start by Sponne with outstanding play from our formidable attack Emily, Hayley, Lily and Izzie leading us to a 8-6 victory. Our final game was against Winchester House and once again our defensive players stepped up, Hermione, Francesca, Becky, and Phoebe made sure we were ahead at the break; however the second half proved too much for us. Winchester House pulled it together and won the match 9-3.

Final Results: 1st – Winchester House, Wellingborough, Sponne, NHS, Oundle, Moulton

Coaches Player of the tournament: Franchesca

Players Player of the tournament: Hermione

Congratulations Girls, You should be very proud.

The Sports Leaders conference is a chance for us to develop our leadership skills further and learn new skills. Today we did a variety of activities that included: CPR training, a course on safeguarding which included how to keep children/young adults safe. We also had an inspiring speech given by Alistair Patrick-Heselton. He talked about his life and how it was a ‘roller coaster and a challenge’. We now know ‘Don’t do anything unless you are enjoying yourself’ He also said ‘Aim for the moon but even if you Miss you’ll still reach the stars’.
Everyone who participated in this sports leaders event loved it and would love to do more within the year. We were joined by 2 different schools which was EWS and Chenderit School. They also really enjoyed this event. Hopefully as a Leadership ‘team’ we will have a good chance to host and participate in more events just like this and different sporting events as they are fun and developed our learning to a better extent.

The University of Leicester be running a range of medicine specific events throughout April 2019 to help both teachers and students find out what they really need to train to become a doctor and study medicine at university.

Teachers’ Medicine Careers Evening - Thursday 4th April 2019, 4-6pm, University of Leicester

The medical profession is changing, and so are the qualities, skills and knowledge required by medical and healthcare students. This free event is aimed at helping equip teachers and careers advisers with the knowledge to support students, especially those from a disadvantaged background aspire to study medicine at university. From research, many students decide that they don’t have what it takes to study medicine before they start their post-16 studies, so we especially want teachers working with younger year groups to attend, so the right advice is given early on.

The revised 'Local Services Booklet for Families & Young people' is now available and can be found on the Wellbeing information page.

Term 4 started with a special darts club session, as Matthew Edgar, PDC professional visited to give students an insight to the world of darts and offer coaching tips and training advice.  Edgar (nicknamed 'Prime Time'), had made his PDC World Championships debut in December, and is currently building up to competing in the UK Open, at Minehead from 1-3 March.

Students opened the session by playing their usual range of warm-up, practice games with Matthew studying their throw, and how they approached the game.  Then it was time for a coaching talk, where Matthew discussed the importance of good stance, and posture when playing darts; not only to be more consistent but also the health benefits. It was then Q&A, where students asked all kinds of questions including about what darts to use, what games to play, and how Edgar got into darts as a child.  The session concluded with further games, with more coaching tips before a photo signing session.  Many thanks for Matthew for giving up his time to visit the club, and running a hugely valuable session,
which our students took lots away from!

With their first attempt at this tournament cancelled due to rain, Friday 15th February was the year 7 County Plate at Kettering Bucclech Academy, this time the sun was shining and Sponne were ready for the challenge.

With five others teams in our pool these first games were against Moulton, Northampton School for Girls, Pitsford, Lodge Park Academy and Kettering Buccleuch Academy and our girls didn’t disappoint.  Despite a slow start the girls soon settled and found their rhythm.  Sponne’s strength in defence meant only 2 goals were let in over all five games.  Throughout the morning, our shooting circle and communication increased and more opportunities were opened up for Sponne to score. This put Sponne top of Pool A and in the Semis playing for the top four places.
