The English Schools Athletics Cup is a national athletics event open to all schools. In this event schools compete in Junior (Yr7/8) and Inter (Yr9/10) competitions and each athlete must compete in both a track and a field event and points are awarded for specific distances or times - a true reflection on the strength of the team. On Friday Sponne competed in the initial County round and results were outstanding.

On Wednesday May 11th the school took part in the annual South Northants  district athletics Championships. There were two age groups – firstly U15 (Yr 8 and 9) and U17 (Yr 10 and 11). The U17 event unfortunately clashed with the Yr11 leavers assembly – hence it was left to the Yr 10 athletes to lead the way. In the girls event, Sponne finished a very good third position of the 10 schools with victories for both Claudia Read and Sophie Jeffery in the 100m and javelin respectively – this was Sophie’s first ever athletics competition !!

Harvey Taylor was the youngest ever referee to officiate at a County Cup Final in our area over the weekend. Well done Harvey!

In her solo performance she came first, her acro duet they came first which also came first overall in her age category.  In the group dances they had two 3rd places, one 4th and a 1st.

With her acro duet and the group dance “Fabulous” they made it through to the grand final along with 14 other finalists.  The duet came in a brilliant 7th place and the group dance came first.  She came away with 3 trophies and 9 medals overall with many more trophies for the group dances.

Thursday 15th March was a very cold afternoon but the Netballers were out in force. Lead by the Sponne Sports Leaders, 10 teams from the Sponne Cluster meet for a fantastic afternoon of Netball.

Teams from Nicholas Hawksmoor, Towcester Primary, Greens Norton, Silverstone, Blakesley and Forest Federation all took part in a thrilling tournament and displayed great skill and sportsmanship.

It has been an exceptionally busy term for many of the Sponne musicians with combined county and school commitments. The term was rounded off on Tuesday evening with our Spring concert featuring all the Sponne music enhancement groups. Over 150 musicians took part and performed to a full house. Well done! Congratulations also to the members of Sponne Brass Band, Jazz Orchestra, String Orchestra, String Ensemble, Sponnaissance and Sponnaissance Reborn who took part in the Regional Festival of Music for Youth on 22nd and 24th March. The performances were very well received with some excellent feedback. Here are some extracts from the music mentor feedback:

Sponne rugby District Champions and County finalists!

On 6th March 2018 the Year 8 Sponne rugby team competed in the District Tournament to qualify for the County Championships. The first match was against our rivals Campion who up to that point we had never beaten. We played well and won 3-1.

Second match was against CCS, again we won 7-0 (tries scored by Will Deamer (2), Josh Howkins(2), Mitchell Boffin and  Lucas Sanger)

On a mission to win the tournament undefeated, we played Moulton. Again a strong win 4-0 (2 Tries by Will Deamer (2), Jayden White and Lewis smith)

Just after half term, 16 of our students across years 7-10 participated in the Winter School Games. All students were involved in extremely intense and demanding races ranging for 2 minutes for year 7s through to 6 minutes for year 10 as well as completing in a team relay over 2017m.

Year 7 and 8 boys (Jeremy Gundle, Harry Pannell, Will Deamer and Lucas Sanger) finished 8th overall , with a particularly notable performance form Jeremy Gundle who was county  runner up in the individual race by a mere 2m!

Here are a few videos from the Music for Youth - Northampton featuring Sponne music groups.

Thank you to Mr Milan for filming them.
