Welcome to Sponne School 2021
We are looking forward to welcoming students back in September and a particularly warm welcome to our new Year 7 students and to any new students starting in Year 12. A reminder that we are running our usual July induction days for Year 7 this week on Thursday and Friday with Year 12 starting on Friday. The staggered start to the year for other students is due to the Government requirement on schools to test students (for whom we have consent) as they return to school and my apologies in advance if this causes any inconvenience.
This continues to be an uncertain time with regard to covid-19 infection rates and transmission. I am aware that levels in our community are still very high and we have been notified of a number of positive cases amongst our student population that will delay their return. I hope that you and your families stay safe and are not affected by this going forward. As a school we are here to support all of our community through these difficulties whilst we minimise the risk of any transmission on site and, at the same time, maintain the high quality learning environment that is an expectation here at Sponne. I have been so proud of the way in which everyone has pulled together during the last 18 months and now we need to make sure that no students are disadvantaged in their learning, because of the situation we have experienced, and ensure that we have systems in place to support the wellbeing of all of the members of our community.
Some of the control measures from last year remain in place, such as the need to wear face coverings when moving around inside the school buildings, slightly amended lunch times and the staggered end of the day. However, the significant changes in our day to day operation that were caused by having to maintain discrete bubbles, have now been removed and students can experience a more normal day with lessons in all specialist areas. This will be particularly good for our Key Stage 3 students who spent a large proportion of last year (when not in lockdown) having all their lessons in E Block. We, as staff, are very much looking forward to being able to teach in our designated areas and having more time to focus on ensuring that the learning experience of all students is vibrant and positive.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 11 and 13 students last year who, once again, were not able to sit their exams as usual but have been awarded teacher assessed grades for their GCSE and A Level subjects. The impact upon these students has been most significant and I’d like to pass on our best wishes to them all in whatever they have moved on to do.
At this point in time I am awaiting further guidance regarding whole school face to face events such as parents’ evenings and will get back to you as soon as I have more details on this.
You will see me at the front of school most mornings and afternoons so do come and speak to me at any point if you need to. I look forward to working with you again this year and hope that you will find our school an excellent community of learning where students are able to dream, believe and achieve.
