Remembrance

On Monday 11th November some Sponne students came to school in service uniform and all students observed a minute of silence as an act of Remembrance. Sponne Musicians performed the last post on the yellow brick road area in school and also at Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary school.

Mini Careers Fair - Year 11 & Sixth Form

On Friday 8th November we had the first of our mini careers fairs for Y11 and 6th Form students. This fair focused on the creative industries and we were supported by a range of education providers and industry experts. Our thanks go to all those who attended and to the students who engaged in such a positive way.

Year 9 Classical Civilisation - Leicester Uni Visit

Year 9 Classical Civilisation students at Sponne visited the University of Leicester on 6 November for the inaugural Ancient World Student Annual Meeting (AWSAM@Leicester). They attended a series of seminars on topics linked to their course, including the depiction of foreigners on Greek pottery and how Herodotus (known as the ‘first historian’) presents the Athenians during the Persian Wars. This was followed by a hands-on ‘Careers in Archaeology’ workshop. The afternoon finished with a lecture given by Professor Tom Harrison, Keeper of Greece and Rome at the British Museum, entitled, ‘What more can you say about the Parthenon Sculptures?’ This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience a university environment and the different styles of teaching there. We are grateful to the Classical Association for a generous grant that covered the travel costs of this trip and to Classics for All for their support in setting up the GCSE Classical Civilisation course, which is available to Sponne students for the first time this year.

Lit in Colour

On October 23rd, Sponne students had the honour of performing at the prestigious ‘Lit in Colour’ Bloomsbury Festival. Following their success in the scene-writing competition, playwrights Emily C and Bella, joined by Emily T and Lucas, had the remarkable opportunity to present their award-winning script. We are immensely proud that our students not only exhibited exceptional professionalism but also shared the stage with esteemed professional actors, writers, and dramaturgs, who were highly complementary of their talents. This extraordinary experience will undoubtedly be one they cherish forever, and Miss McGlen is confident it marks the beginning of their promising acting journeys. We couldn’t be prouder of them all.

Inspirational speaker for Sixth Form

We were delighted to welcome Henry Dunn into school to speak with all of our sixth formers.

He talked about his life changing injury, while on a gap year in Australia, the importance of changing your mind set and having resilience to over come any life adversities.

This term Year 13, in particular, have been working on a unit of work during the registration programme which explores resilience.  Todays talk was another great example of the importance of this skill in life.

The Matt Hampson Foundation supported Henry with his journey through treatment and recovery; to show our support the sixth form will hold a mufti day tomorrow (Thursday 24th Oct- sixth form only). Please contribute through Scopay.

A very powerful talk from an inspirational young man, thank you.
